The 2023 One Act Play Festival

At Las Cruces Community Theatre March 17-26, 2023

Las Cruces Community Theatre Is now accepting applications from interested authors and/or directors for our 34th annual One Act Play Festival.

This year’s theme is “New Beginnings.”

Every year, the Las Cruces Community Theatre promotes our local writers by offering them an opportunity to present their work in front of live audiences.  We are looking for original theatre works written by local playwrights which meet the following guidelines:

ORIGINAL SCRIPT GUIDELINES:

  • One act plays, or a cutting of a full length original play

  • 10-15 minutes in length (no longer, please!)

  • Simple technical/design requirements

  • No more than six in the cast

  • Content should be suitable for a general audience

Playwrights interested in applying should apply with a stage director, or the author may direct their own work.  If the playwright does not have a director and the play is chosen for the festival, LCCT will assign a director, but this is NOT preferred.

DESIGN/TECHNICAL:  The One Act Play Festival celebrates new voices and new scripts; the design and technical aspects of the plays need to be kept to a minimum.  If a play is selected for the Festival, the One Act Play Festival Production Supervisor (Gail Wheeler) will communicate with the author and director before the first rehearsal to discuss the design and technical aspects of the play.

BUDGETS:  The budget for each play is $50 which is to be spent on set, costume, and prop expenses only.

AUDITIONS:  Pre-casting of some or all roles is encouraged.  If you need to hold auditions, LCCT will hold a group audition for all of the one acts on Wednesday, February 15th from 6:30-8:00 PM.  All the directors and authors seeking cast members should attend the audition.

REHEARSALS:  Directors should plan on 8 hours of rehearsal for the typical 15-minute play, not including the week of dress/tech rehearsals before opening.  Scheduling the time and place for rehearsals (before tech week) is the responsibility of the playwright and/or director.   Rehearsals will typically be scheduled in the evenings and weekends.  Tech week rehearsal at the theatre is scheduled for Monday, March 13th through Thursday, March 16th, from approximately 6-9 PM.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:

  • Friday and Saturday, March 17 & 18th at 7:30 PM, and a Sunday matinee March 19th at 2 PM.

  • Friday and Saturday, March 24 & 25th at 7:30 PM, and a Sunday matinee March 26th at 2 PM.

All applications must be submitted by Friday, February 10, 2023, to the email listed in the application.  You will be contacted regarding the status of your submission by Monday, February 13, 2023.
