Sam Shepard's TRUE WEST

Directed by Michael Wise

“True West” follows the story of two estranged brothers, Austin and Lee. Austin is a straight-laced/ivy league graduate who has a successful budding career as a screenwriter in the film industry. Austin is housesitting for his mother (“Mom”) in southern California while he works on a new screenplay. Lee (Austin’s older brother) is a beer-drinking drifter and a petty thief, who unexpectedly shows up and proceeds to disrupt Austin’s life, eventually managing to take over the writing of the screenplay himself after conning Saul ( a movie producer who is interested in Austin’s script) into supporting his project over Austin’s screenplay . The two brothers end up in a role-reversal, with each admitting that he has always envied the other's way of life. Think - Cain and Abel in suburbia.
